"It's horrific and beautiful at the same time."

If there was a movie from the movie Gods that was tailor made to make me happy, Don't Look Up is that movie.

I watched it three times the weekend it came out, and I'm watching it again right now.

I love news, pop culture, politics, books, space and a lot of other things in life. Don't Look Up is a perfect mix of all of those things.

For the two people in the world who haven't seen it, here's a tl;dr: A comet is heading towards Earth, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence play scientists who try to warn the president. Instead of actually giving a shit, Jonah Hill, the Chief of Staff at the White House, criticizes Jennifer Lawrence for what she's wearing.

People deny the comet's existence. The president sends a nude photo to someone and gets caught. There's an Ariana Grande concert in there. There are more politicians being morons.

Basically, if we rely on politicians to save the world, we're all totally screwed. Earth is totally screwed.

And, there's a George Strait song playing when people finally see the comet in the sky, which is pretty cool in my book.

My favorite parts:

"Easy there, boy with the dragon tattoo."

"He bought a Gutenburg Bible and then lost it."

"May Jesus Christ bless each and every single one of you, especially young members of my own party."

"He's from a different generation."

"We really did have it all, didn't we?"

But my most favorite quote of all: "Thanks for dressing up."

This movie nailed it so hard, it could not nail it more. Because I've lost count of the number of times (in a former job) that I was in a meeting with a powerful man who only commented on my appearance and what I was wearing instead of the thing I was actually talking about.

That is spot on how women are treated in the world.

Thank you, movie Gods, for giving me Don't Look Up.

That's my brand of humor and I love it.

Caveat: I heard Neil deGrasse Tyson speak at SXSW back in the day. I even blogged about it!

My favorite thing he said ever: "I wonder if we're smart enough to figure the universe out. We define ourselves as intelligent. But we're the ones who came up with the test."

Hint: We are not smart enough to figure the universe out. We're pretty stupid.

Houseguest

About a week ago, I loaded up my favorite little redheaded niece in preparation for our date.

I took her out to eat, and then picked up her sisters and Grandma to go see Frozen 2.

During lunch, my favorite little redhead kept saying, "Monica, I'm so excited to see this movie." As am I, child. (Not really.)

We got ready to leave the restaurant, and we were running kind of late. I walked to my car, opened the back door, and told the redhead to get in the car.

She was hesitant, so I told her to get in the car because we were running late. And then I looked in the back of the car, where I saw one booster seat instead of two.

And then I realized that the car I was trying to get my niece to crawl in to was not my car.

Oops!

In my defense, the car was unlocked and looked exactly like my car. (Aunt of the year award goes to...) I went over a couple of parking spaces, got said child into the right car, and off we went.

Every time I've gotten into a car with that little redhead since then, she looks up at me and says, "Gee Aunt Monica, I hope we get into the right car this time."

And then she looks at me and rolls her eyes.

I have no idea where this child got her sarcasm from. I mean, I have no idea whatsoever.

On Jedis and truck stops.

This is going to be nerdy, so please be patient.

The only thing that I really know about Star Wars is that I don't like any of the movies. The Last Jedi was pretty, and I can appreciate that, but that's where my appreciation for all things Star Wars ends.

Anyway, I remember watching Episode 1: The Phantom Menace back in the day in the theater with friends. If I remember right, there had to be some reason I went to that movie. I'm guessing it had to do with a boy band and TRL on MTV.

(God, I'm old.)

Anyway, while on this weekend road trip with my friend friend, he had probably the best description of a Star Wars movie I've ever heard.

First, let's see what Dr. Google says about Episode 1:

When the Trade Federation cuts off all routes to the planet Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are assigned to settle the matter.

My friend friend has a point: The entire premise of the movie is that these Jedis can't get off of a planet.

In his words: "It's like SEAL Team Six being stuck at a truck stop."

Me: "Maybe they locked their keys in their car. Or maybe their car got stolen."

His words: "You're SEAL Team Six. Call a Black Hawk."

I hate losing arguments, but I have to give him this one.

He's not wrong.

Rainy trip.

Cap.

I bought the kids Captain America shirts this weekend. I asked little K, who is 4 and in preschool, what size shirt she wears.
Her response:  “One or eight or five or two or three.”
Thanks, kid. That really answers my question. ðŸ¤£
