Perfect

The perfect snow does not happen very often in Kansas.

There are ice storms, wind events, hail, earthquakes and thundersnow. But a good, old-fashioned snowstorm that dumps inches of perfect, wet snow all day doesn't happen very often.

It happened this week. When I woke up yesterday morning, I knew that it was the perfect day to take the kids sledding. (I know that because I wanted to go sledding.)

I cleaned off my car, struck out at buying sleds at the first store I went to, then called around town to find them.

Oh, man. It's been a really long time since I had that much fun.

Plus, when the kids said they were cold, I pulled out my favorite Christmas Vacation line: "Yeah, well, it's all part of the experience."

I read a comment on Facebook of the decision to close school for the day. Something like: 'That was the best decision ever. There were families building snowmen all over town and families out sledding everywhere."

I agree, school district. Best decision ever.

We only had a little bit of fun. A little bit. Look at that smile!

Blurbs for Monday

This weekend I posted Facebook updates on my nieces, an NPR story about Syria and a link to my previous blog post.

My mind wanders.

(Some people say I have a short attention span salad.)

-----

My friends and I played Cards Against Humanity the other night. The best card, that I can say out loud without blushing?

Tonight on Nickelodeon: Clarissa explains liking big butts and not being able to lie about it.

Giggle.

-----

I've had a quote stuck in my head from Lost over the past week or so.

"Shouldn't we be encouraging the ones with ambition?

-----

We got a couple inches of snow last night.

Penny the Pug isn't happy.

Of course, on Facebook this morning people are griping about the road conditions. Can't we afford to salt our roads? Our taxes are too damn high! This town sucks! This state sucks! We should move!

People, it's two inches of snow. Learn how to drive.

There was a car in the ditch on my way to work this morning. It sucks for that car, and in case it's somebody I know, that's a bummer, dude. I hope the car isn't damaged (it was a Ford Focus, though, so maybe it needs to be damaged).

Like I said above, it's two inches of snow, not two feet of white stuff.

Gah.

Keep moving.

My policy for driving in the snow is a lot like my policy for falling down. No matter what happens, you have to keep moving.

When driving in the snow and slush, the only thing I want is to not get stuck. Most of the time I want to keep going forward, but there are times when going sideways is acceptable.

The point is you can’t stay where you are – you have to keep moving and get to your destination.

A Google image of snow.
I’ve had plenty of time to think about this. According to my Dad, we just received our 20th snow of the season (that data is not scientific, though). Driving in it and being in it is not my cup of tea.

I lived in cities away from my family for a lot of my adult life. When I lived away I couldn’t rely on family members to help me dig my car out if I got stuck. I knew that I had to put a shovel in my trunk, drive carefully, and hope for the best.

Getting stuck is not an option.

I tested my ‘keep moving’ theory when I decided to walk through snow-covered grass yesterday. I stepped in a hole and tripped. I'm happy to report that I didn't hurt myself and my ego wasn't even damaged that much.

I didn’t miss a beat. Sure, half of my body was covered in snow and it was obvious I fell, but hey. Sometimes you just have to keep moving to get where you want to go.

How gracefully you got there doesn’t really matter in the end.
